- Convert the percentage to a fraction, not a decimal
 75% of 64 is 3/4 of 64 = 48, in one step. As 0.75 × 64 it is a multiplication. The fraction table below is the single highest-return thing to memorise in the whole quant section.
- Swap the two numbers when it helps
 *a*% of *b* always equals *b*% of *a*. 16% of 25 looks awkward; 25% of 16 is 4. This identity costs nothing and turns a fair number of questions into one glance.
- Break awkward percentages into easy pieces
 37.5% is 25% + 12.5%. 15% is 10% + 5%, and 5% is half of 10%. Building the answer out of tenths and halves is faster than any single multiplication, and it is far less error-prone under a clock.
- Treat successive changes as multipliers
 A 20% rise followed by a 20% fall is 1.2 × 0.8 = 0.96, a 4% net *fall*, not a return to where you started. Every successive-change question in a bank paper turns on this.

The wrong options are not random numbers. Each one is the result of a specific careless error for this

#### Assuming a rise then an equal fall cancels out

Up 20% then down 20% leaves you 4% below where you started, because the fall is taken on the larger number. The setter will offer "no change" as an option and it will look right.

#### Confusing percentage points with percent

A rate going from 5% to 7% has risen by two percentage *points* and by 40 *percent*. Data interpretation sets ask for one and offer the other.

#### Taking the percentage of the wrong base

"20% more than B" and "20% less than A" are not inverse statements. If A is 20% more than B, then B is 16.66% less than A — not 20%.

Because the fall is taken on the larger number. 100 becomes 120, and 20% off 120 is 96, a net loss of 4%. A rise and an equal fall of x percent always leave you down x² / 100 percent, so 20% costs 4% and 10% costs 1%, in either order.

#### What is the difference between 5 percentage points and 5 percent?

If a rate moves from 20% to 25%, that is a rise of 5 percentage points but of 25 percent. Papers ask for both, sometimes in the same set, and reading points as percent turns 25 into 5. The wrong one of the pair is always printed as an option.

#### B earns 25% more than A — is A's income 25% less than B's?

No, 20% less. If A is 100 then B is 125, and the gap of 25 is now measured against 125, not 100. The base moved. The pairs worth memorising: 25% more one way is 20% less the other, 50% more is 33 1/3% less, and 100% more is 50% less.

#### Why convert percentages to fractions?

Because it removes the multiplication. 37.5% of 640 as 3/8 of 640 is 240 in one step, where the decimal route is a three-digit multiplication. Under a 30-second clock that difference decides whether you attempt the question at all.

#### Which percentage-to-fraction values should I memorise?
